Steam is kind because they allow their customers to use ‘language’ (sometimes) but protect the innocent reader from those bad words with Black Heart emoji. So nice.

my review of the game {posted here for evaluation and fact checking}
hi so I made a review but I just want to run it past the community to make sure i didn’t ♥♥♥♥ up anywhere

DShannah-natsukiYou know those creepypastas that you’d find on some remote corner of reddit that had the .exe extension in the title, you’d read it and follow along with the main character as they uncover some sort of dark truth to an otherwise innocent video game, and then it turns out the twist was the most obvious thing known to mankind? Then, you look at the comments in horror as you see people with names such as “xXjeffkillerfanxx” praise it, overlook all the flaws and inspire the author to churn out more mediocore horror with no chance of improvement due to the aforementioned overwhelming praise, then in the near future where it has become quite popular within internet culture when you express your dislike for this piece of fiction, you are accused of not liking it due to its popularity? That’s this game and its subculture summed up.

You see, there’s this pattern with internet fandoms, indie horror game is released, it attracts a fanbase, fanbase decays, gg. But unlike FNaF and♥♥♥♥♥♥this game didn’t need a few years to decay, as soon as it attracted any sort of fandom it was hailed like the commies hailed their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ farming/construction tools and red star. Remember the Steam awards, well GMod won over DDLC in the defies description category and people weren’t jokey-mad like “Haha, ah well doesn’t really matter.” They were♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥right the ♥♥♥♥ off.

This is ♥♥♥♥ing stupid because, GMod is a game and DDLC is a visual novel. And in the GAME awards this typically matters. GMod beats the absolute♥♥♥♥♥♥out of DDLC in every possible way, it has actual GAMEPLAY (:OOOO) it has replayability, endless stream of multiplayer servers, ect. and it’s really ♥♥♥♥ing gay to see people insult this game that has been slowly worked on since 2004 by a dedicated developer that actually cares for their community. Get over it losers, GMod won and DDLC lost, there isn’t a need for a ♥♥♥♥ing recount “oh muh recount muh recount” no, ♥♥♥♥ off. It’s a useless ♥♥♥♥ing game awards, just because the majority of people liked a video game over an “EXPERIENCE!!!!!!” where you sit and click for 4 hours, and then get jumpscared doesn’t mean you have to♥♥♥♥♥♥all over a man’s project that he has continued to update for fourteen ♥♥♥♥ing years.

Anyway, the actual “EXPERIENCE”

because of the fact you’re giving three consecutive “trigre!!111” warnings about the “disturbdeing contenkt”, YouTubers you don’t even watch are having their videos suggested to you with titles and thumbnails that basically spoil the entire plot within a fraction of a themtosecond (luckily i didnt experience these spoilers before i actually “played” ddlc) and the tag on the front page of the ♥♥♥♥ing game has a “pyschological horror” tag, you’d imagine it’s pretty hard to play this game (im just gonna call it a game because i cant be bothered putting quotation marks) without the “dakr plott” of said game being crammed down your tiny dickhole, but alas I managed to dodge these spoilers for the sole purpose of having a fair and clean experience.

It wasn’t worth it.

If you think FNaF relies on jumpscares, this game blows FNaF out of the ♥♥♥♥ing water, basically it starts out normal, you sit there clicking rapidly, wash rinse repeat, suddenly worst girl (fight me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) starts going to school less, afterwards they have some SUPER EMOTIONAL AND SAD BREAKDOWSN WHER THEY TELL YOU THERE DEPRESSED :OOOOO. Then you guessed it, after some of the most obvious, blatant, build-up in the history of mankind that you’d have to literally be a human lymph node to not see coming they hang themself. They ♥♥♥♥ing hang themself, suddenly, they just ♥♥♥♥ing hang themself. There’s no slow descent into depression, just BOOM, “oh muh depressed” and they’re ♥♥♥♥ing dead. And it’s all your fault, player! YEAH, even though there’s no choices in this game (There’s the illusion of choice but it doesn’t follow through and fans defend this by saying it says something about us as humans having no choice in society, basically the most forced defense ever) BUT PLAYER, you see, IT’S ALL YOUR ♥♥♥♥ING FAULT. YOU HAD A CHOICE, DAMMIT, YOU DID, IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT. FEEL BAD. FEEL BAD DAMMIT, WHY DON’T YOU ♥♥♥♥ING FEEL BAD, EEEEEEEEE.

After this, they’re deleted from the game or something by 2nd best waifu and then you have to restart the game. Here’s where boredom REALLY kicks in (at the worst time as well) considering you have to sit through the ENTIRE game leading to that point but with really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ half-jumpscared half-glitch effects that look like they were ran through some Sony Vegas Watch_Dogs inspired plugin. And all you do is click, and you KEEP ♥♥♥♥ING CLICKING until more glitch effects, blah blah, I can’t really remember much because I was half-asleep at this point, what I do remember is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Natsuki (best waifu) jumpscare, Yuri kills herself in the most forced and almost hilarious way possible, and then Monika deletes them both and you’re transported into some space classroom where Monika spouts a bunch of pseudo-deep stuff about god or whatever, you delete them, restart the game, same scene described as above but with worst waifu and then game ends. At this point, you realise with despair that the game took a whole ♥♥♥♥ing two hours to get anywhere near interesting, and you weren’t rewarded at all with anything but jumpscares and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ death scenes. The ♥♥♥♥ing end, retard, you just wasted four hours of your life with ♥♥♥♥ all, you coulda gone out and watered plants and♥♥♥♥♥♥ but no, you sat here and you looked at anime tiddy for a whole ♥♥♥♥ING FOUR HOURS.

review wip will update soon i just want to see the comment section lol

as much as i think ddlc is overrated, you seem overly attached to your sentiment; lol calm down

but it’s interesting that you observed “inde horror” thread that ties these fanbases together, usually with the same kind of people

i’ve seen this phenomenon over and over again in things that aren’t inde horror games like undertale, and even further back with things that aren’t videogames, like webcomics (honestuck is an infamous example)

i’m pretty damn curious as to why certain kinds of media attracts these certain kinds of people and i’ve been pondering about it for years now

I’ll admit this fanbase is the only one that rubbed me the wrong way

oh yeah certainly, some folks get extremely rabid about liking it and the moment someone says something remotely critical about it, they go off like a volcano

it’s a bit jarring to think that someone would be that emotionally invested over defending the internet honor of a visual novel

It’s just… like imo it’s a hard game to defend once you analyse the plot threads and the general novel as a whole. Like, if you make it so that the characters are lifeless shells of anime tropes, and you succeed (which they did) then guess what folks. YOU’VE MADE A LIFELESS SHELL OF AN ANIME TROPE! CONGRATS!

I find that a lot of people who like DDLC actually tend to miss the point of why the story is the way it is and just drool at the girl of their preference. There is something meaningful behind it all, but it’s obfuscated by waifuism and YT-bait clichés. The girls are definitely all walking anime tropes, and there’s a reason for why that is, but I consistently see people go on about how Shygirl McBigboobs has depth as an actual character rather than as a critique of the archetype she was built from.

The other component to that is the plot. It’s novel in its own right, but it falls apart by the end. The thing that was done to salvage it was to connect it to Project Libitina, which is something that lets the fanbase turn plot holes into speculation fuel to keep the fanbase hyped while it is in production. The problem with this is that it might set false expectations for some of them, should the resulting product not have the anime tiddies they thought they would get.

Well, that was a great wankfest and I found it in discussion b4 it was on the front page or whatever Steam calls it. So was wondering about the 14 comments.

All I saw here was $udenoma who made sense if we might quibble about some details.

Anyway, I couldn’t take it seriously until I saw a fact check that made sense: “GMod is a game and DDLC is a visual novel etc.” (Are you Raven ~ before? The style is similar.) But there is so much superfluous ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t in your text, it pretty well pins you down, way down, in the Steam subculture. … ♥♥♥♥ingay … tiny dickhole … I like, tho, your description of ” all you do is click, and you KEEP ♥♥♥♥ING CLICKING until more glitch effects, blah blah, I can’t really remember much because I was half-asleep at this point, what I do remember is a ♥♥♥♥” … LOL and you call yourself a gamer.

See, the dev set out to take the mickey out of the JP dating scene AND was well aware of the jaded “seen everything b4” cohort in Steamland and you didn’t even see it coming.

Did you ever even wonder why the dev made the mc as generic and unlikeable as possible? Does not fit the sterotype, eh? Why? But no, you just click through with your mind? on neutral.

And to think I’d have lost all hope in seeing this go any further, ah well. I will take back the parts about Project Lib, because now I read up and found out that their next venture will be a more standard VN with little to no ties to DDLC. Still, some people are expecting otherwise, which makes all of that speculation fuel a bit misleading.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore the idea of a VN that gets spun on its head like this, but I feel that it wasn’t executed well enough for the praise it gets. I get the characters being the way they are (which is OP’s problem for not understanding), and Monika, as much as I dislike her, was important to solidify this as a critique on its own genre. But the plot gets progressively incoherent, it tries too hard to scare you once things get going (when IMO, nothing could top Sayori’s suicide so every other attempt felt cheap), and they neglected Natsuki in the sense that they wasted her potential in the story.

People/fans are fond of misleading themselves. Take the binary code from Monika.chr, many accept it as Monika speaking. Anyone who’s looked deeply into the morass of DDLC knows better than accepting the bleeding obvious.

It’s like the generally accepted conventional wisdom that Natsuki’sfather is an abusive ratbag. You don’t really get that from Natsuki. She tells the mc, “Like I could have a boy over my place,” (the weekend arc). Just like a teen from the dawn of time.

The bad stuff is glitched text coutesy of … ?

I feel that it also has to do with our preconceptions when dealing with certain things. Pattern recognition and all that. Your former example is a result of things like ARGs that incentivized people to pay attention to every little detail. The latter comes from the almost stereotyped expectations that come with reading a lot of visual novels. The standard format of a VN (especially romance ones) would be:
get into route>learn about character’s issue>see it to its conclusion
This can be seen in how act 1 was a clear setup to this before it got derailed. One could assume that the girls’ problems would’ve come to the surface regardless if the plot was played straight.

I would come up with some sort of comeback but you assumed I call myself a gamer and that’s the first sign that you didn’t listen. At all.

Actually, I do want to point something out: having an unlikeable generic character on purpose (such as MC) is a really bad move in a VN like DDLC. It’s completely story based with absolutely no gameplay going for it, so if your main character is purposefully bland as well as the entire cast of characters then thats not a parody, that’s lazy writing and since there’s no gameplay to fall back on then it’s not an enjoyable experience at all.
